# Voice to text for Windows

> Latch is voice to text for Windows that skips the browser tab and the copy-and-paste. Click into any app, tap Ctrl+Win, and talk. Tap it again and clean text is pasted at your cursor.

Talk, and it is typed where you are. Last updated 2026-10-04. HTML version: https://latchvoice.less.style/voice-to-text

## Example

You say: "uh hey Marco so just confirming thursday at, no wait, friday at ten and I'll bring the draft"

Latch pastes:

> Hey Marco, just confirming Friday at 10. I'll bring the draft.

## Most voice to text tools make you carry the text yourself.

Search for voice to text and most results fall into two groups. Online pages open a microphone in a browser tab: you dictate, then copy the text somewhere else, and some only run in one browser or cap a session at a few minutes. Converters take a recording you already have and give a transcript back; they cannot take dictation live.

Latch skips the middle step. The text goes straight into the app you are typing in, and a take that fails to process is kept on your PC instead of vanishing with the tab.

## Voice to text with nothing in between.

- **No tab, no copy-paste.** Latch pastes at the cursor of the app you are in: Outlook, Slack, Word, Notion, VS Code. Your clipboard is put back after the paste, so what you had copied is still there.
- **One chord, tap or hold.** Tap Ctrl+Win and recording latches on while you think. Tap again to finish. For a short line, hold it while you talk and let go.
- **Takes up to 10 minutes.** Talk through a whole reply or a long prompt in one take. There is no five-minute session to watch and no timer in a tab.
- **Never loses what you said.** If the connection drops or the service is busy, the take stays on your PC for up to 24 hours and the badge shows Retry. Cancel it or close the app while it is processing, and it is kept too.
- **[Clean text out](https://latchvoice.less.style/dictation-software-that-removes-ums-windows.md).** Ums, false starts, and “no wait” corrections are removed. Numbers come out as numbers and names stay as you said them. Your tone stays yours.
- **Silence costs nothing.** Press the chord and say nothing, and the badge says “No speech heard”. Nothing is pasted and no minutes are used.

## Ways to turn voice into text on a PC.

| What differs | Online voice-to-text page | Voice-to-text converter (file upload) | Windows voice typing (Win+H) | Latch |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Where the text ends up | In the page; you copy it out | In a transcript you copy or download | At your cursor | At your cursor, in any app |
| How you start | Open the site and allow the microphone | Upload a recording and wait | Win+H, then wait for “Listening...” | Ctrl+Win: tap to latch, or hold to talk |
| Limits you may hit | Some work only in Chrome, and some cap a session at a few minutes | File size and length caps | The microphone switches off if you wait about 10 seconds before speaking | A take can run up to 10 minutes |

Online pages and converters are often free and good for a one-off. Latch is for when voice to text is part of how you work.

## Who it fits

Good fit:

- You want to talk instead of type in the apps you already use.
- You are tired of opening a page, dictating, and copying the result across.
- You dictate long answers and do not want a session that times out.
- You write in more than one language.

Not a good fit:

- You have a recording to convert. Latch is live dictation; use a transcription service for files.
- You need voice to text on a phone or a Mac. Latch is Windows only for now.
- You need to work offline. Each take is processed online.

## Questions

### How do I convert voice to text on a Windows PC?

Two ways. Windows has voice typing built in: put your cursor in a text box, press Win+H, wait for “Listening...”, and talk. Or install Latch, sign in from the badge, and press Ctrl+Win in any text field. Latch cleans the text up before it is pasted.

### Can I convert a voice recording to text?

No. Latch is live dictation: you speak and the text is pasted at your cursor. To convert a recording, use a transcription service.

### Is there a limit on how long I can talk?

A single take can run up to 10 minutes. There is no monthly cut-off: the free plan gives 60 recorded minutes with every feature and a reminder past that, never a cut-off.

### What if my connection drops halfway?

You do not lose the take. The badge keeps it on your PC for up to 24 hours and shows Retry. Nothing is pasted until it works.

### Does it work on my phone?

Not yet. Latch is Windows only for now, on Windows 10 and 11.

### Is it really free?

Yes. Every account gets 60 recorded minutes a month with every feature. No card needed. Past 60 minutes you get a reminder, never a cut-off.

### Do you keep my audio or transcripts?

No. Audio and text pass through our server in memory for a single take and are dropped when the text comes back.

### How long does setup take?

About a minute: run the installer, sign in from the badge, and press Ctrl+Win in any text field.
